Abia State: God’s Own State


Located in the southeastern region of Nigeria, Abia State is a land of enterprise, cultural richness, and natural beauty. Created in 1991 from part of Imo State, Abia is one of Nigeria’s 36 states and proudly bears the slogan “God’s Own State.”

Geography and People

Abia shares boundaries with Imo, Ebonyi, Enugu, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Anambra States. Its capital is Umuahia, while Aba, the commercial nerve center, is known across West Africa for its vibrant markets and industrious population. The state is predominantly inhabited by the Igbo people, who are known for their entrepreneurial spirit, rich cultural heritage, and strong sense of community.

Economy and Industry

Abia State is a key driver of Nigeria’s informal economy, thanks largely to Aba — often referred to as the Japan of Africa — where thousands of local artisans and small manufacturers produce high-quality clothing, footwear, leather products, and industrial goods. The Ariaria International Market is one of the largest markets in West Africa, attracting traders from across the continent.
The state also boasts significant agricultural activity. Major crops include yam, cassava, maize, oil palm, and vegetables. Abia is also rich in natural resources like crude oil, natural gas, limestone, and lead, positioning it as a potential hub for industrial and energy development.

Education and Innovation

Abia is home to several notable institutions, including Abia State University (ABSU), Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, and Abia State Polytechnic. These institutions contribute to the state’s educational development and serve as centers for research and innovation.

Tourism and Culture

Culturally vibrant, Abia celebrates festivals such as the New Yam Festival (Iri Ji) and Ekpe Festival, which showcase the rich traditions, dance, and music of the Igbo people. Tourist attractions include the National War Museum in Umuahia, which tells the story of the Nigerian Civil War, and the Azumini Blue River, known for its crystal-clear waters and serene environment.

Governance and Development
